This collection of communication devices and navigation equipment represents a fraction of over 500 nautical pieces acquired by Samir Farag that were used in the maritime industry of Staten Island. Samir Farag, who started his own Rosebank business repairing and maintaining electronic equipment in 1976, began amassing his collection in 1978 storing decommissioned equipment models as technology upgraded. |
|
These pieces include transmitter radios, receivers, radar, walkie-talkies, satellite navigators, LORAN, depth finders and facsimilies weather maps. The oldest piece of equipment in the exhibit is a receiver dating back about 75 years to 1939. This exhibition offers a visual timeline of how maritime technology has evolved over the past century in the commercial shipping industry. The Lenape Gallery at the Conference House Park Visitor Center and the New York City Parks Department is pleased to showcase these important pieces of nautical history. |
