National Maritime Day was May 22, 2020. In 1993, Congress proclaimed May 22nd as National Maritime Day to commemorate the first voyage across the Atlantic Ocean using steam power. In 1819, the American steamship Savannah sailed out of Savannah, Georgia, embarking on a journey to England. On this day every year, we recognize the American maritime industry and its great contributions to our country’s economy and military. This year’s theme is “Resilient Sealift for a Resilient Nation,” which represents the maritime industry of the United States and its support for the nation, even during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although we can not celebrate in person, we can still come together virtually and recognize one of the most important industries in our country.
